Description
Mourning the death of his grandmother, D’Angelo Russell wasn’t sure he would even play against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Not only did he decide to suit up, but the grieving rookie won the Los Angeles Lakers the game. Russell showed why the Lakers made him the second pick in the 2016 draft, grabbing a defensive rebound and leading the game’s final counterattack with his squad down two points. When Metta World Peace’s try at a game-winning corner triple fell short, Julius Randle chased down the offensive board and swung the ball back to Russell, whose own 3-pointer as time expired got the lucky bounce the Lakers were looking for. Russell posted 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals while helping Los Angeles prevail 110-109 on April 9, 2017. Russell was named to the 2016-17 All-Rookie Second Team after averaging 13.2 points in 80 games.
