Native to Puerto Rico, they are a distant subspecies of vampires. Their preference for feeding on small prey or livestock earned them the name ’Goat Sucker’. Almost hunted to extinction in the mid-1900’s they fell into legend. In the 1980s a clutch of eggs was shipped out and sold in the exotic animal market. Many hatched and escaped into the wild of neighboring countries and almost became an invasive species. The population was finally controlled and removed for study or release in Puerto Rico.
